Ladbrokes Australia will become the driving force behind harness racing in South Australia after confirming a deal to become the major partner of Globe Derby and all other harness venues across the state.

In a significant long-term deal for the harness racing code in South Australia, Ladbrokes, part of Entain Australia and New Zealand will aim to continue the revival of the sport in the State.

Dean Shannon, CEO of Ladbrokes Australia, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "It is a great time to team-up with South Australian harness racing. There's real energy and optimism back in the industry after some really challenging years.

“Dean Elliott and his board have re-engaged participants, boosted the horse population and driven a vitally important increase in market share."

Shannon said Ladbrokes hoped to build on the proud heritage of harness racing in the South Australia.

“SA owned-and-bred mare Encipher, who was recently retired, gave the industry something to celebrate when she won the inaugural running of the world's richest harness race, the $2.1mil Eureka at Menangle last September,” Shannon said.

“There's such a rich heritage to SA harness racing through the horses and people the industry has produced. Names like Greg Sugars, Kate Gath, Geoff Webster, along with brothers John and Lance Justice... all superstars and all still active at the top level.

"Entain has built a proud record of telling the stories of its racing partners and growing together. We're looking forward to working with Harness Racing SA to continue the resurgence of the sport in their state."

Dean Elliott, CEO of Harness Racing SA, welcomed the partnership, stating, "We are thrilled to partner with Ladbrokes Australia as we continue to drive the growth and development of harness racing in South Australia. This partnership will provide valuable support to our industry and further enhance the experience for participants and fans alike."

Anne Mowday, President of the South Australian Harness Racing Club, also expressed her excitement about the partnership, saying, "This collaboration between Ladbrokes Australia and harness racing in South Australia is a fantastic development for our sport. As a Club we look forward to working together to achieve great success on and off the track."

SA Country Harness Racing Clubs Association (SACHRCA) President Mick Darling added, “Regional racing in South Australia has been a backbone of the local industry. The Country Cups Series is a relatively new concept that is growing some legs, with the upcoming 2024 series set to be the most enthralling to date. The SACHRCA are looking forward to partnering with Ladbrokes and growing together in this space.”
